Winter Solstice [Dec. 21st, 2008|10:32 pm]

So, a few years ago we started celebrating the solstice. We take stale bread, old veggies, (not rotten, just stuff we'd likely throw out) and go up on the hill and put it out for the deer. We tell the kids we're honoring our pagan ancestors by celebrating the solstice. We "make an offering to the gods and ask them to bring back the sun". Then we tell how man was given dominion over the beasts of the earth. This means responsibility, so we are actually feeding the deer. We also tell how Christmas is appropriately celebrated near the solstice because the solstice is when the sun "returns" by staying longer, giving life to the earth and the plants, therefor the animals and people, and how Christ brought light to the earth and eternal life to man. We tie the whole thing in to Christianity and our particular beliefs.
this year we won't be celebrating. We aren't in our house due to the remodel, and time has gotten away from us. Perhaps we can celebrate next weekend, as the actual "longest night" is sometimes after Christmas where we live ,due to the mountains.
What a mess this year has been.
